If a consumer calls about a Black and Decker smoke detector, the consumer should be advised that This smoke detector, like most smoke detectors, is an ionization detector which contains a small amount of Americium-241. Federal Law does not prohibit the disposal of such residential smoke detectors via normal municipal waste collection because it contains less than 5 μCi (microcurie)of Americium-241.

If the consumer wishes to recycle the smoke detector they should contact Curie Environmental Services at 505-888-9392.
