SCW3000S | Additional Product Information

A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a type of hardware device that processes the signal from your internet service provider that is being carried over by a phone, cable, fiber-optic, or satellite links. In general, the modem allows your computer to connect to the internet.

If you are just connecting one device to the internet a standard modem is really all you would need. However, if you intend to connect multiple devices to the internet you would need a router or an all in one modem/router combo unit. A router will create a local network that assigns each device you want to connect there own local IP address. Please keep in mind that not all routers are wireless.
