Iron - Garment Care Tips
General Tips
- Never put a garment on right after ironing – this can actually create wrinkles. Always wait about 5 minutes after ironing to set the press.
Specific Fabric Care
Cashmere
- Always hand wash in cold water with baby shampoo or woolite.
- Quick drying tip, use a salad spinner and lay it flat to finish drying
Cotton
- Machine wash in warm water on a normal wash cycle and iron with high heat levels
- Keep towels, robes, and washcloths fluffy by using half the recommended detergent and running them through an extra rinse cycle
Jeans
- Maintain color by adding white vinegar to final rinse. If you want them more faded, wash once in hot water
- Pre-Washed Jeans (already faded): Washing is recommended only when they’re stained or start to sag – zap odors by freezing them in a plastic bag for 2 days
Polyester
- This fabric is prone to static cling, use fabric softener while washing to help reduce it
Rayon (Aka Viscose)
- Has a silky appearance but breathes like cotton – but wrinkles easily and cannot handle high ironing heat
- Hang items when they’re totally wet without wringing or twisting, this helps the garment hold its shape
Silk
- Hand washing is best, do not wring out, and only iron on low heat without steam (it can leave watermarks)
Stains
- Use white wine to remove red wine stains
- Use dawn to remove grease or oil stains
Velvet
- Be careful while ironing velvet, you can crush the pile or leave an iron imprint
