Toaster - Sparks
It is normal for toasters to emit a brief spark from inside, near the toast control lever, when toasting is complete, or the cancel button is pressed, and the lever releases.
All pop-up toasters include a mechanical electrical switch. When the toaster is in use, the contacts in the switch connect, and electricity flows through. When the toast cycle is complete, the contacts separate. A brief arc of electricity, or spark, between the contacts can occur. The spark is more visible on some models due to the placement of the internal components, venting, and size of the toast slots. We also include a visual shield on some models to prevent consumers from seeing the electrical arc and becoming unnecessarily alarmed.
CSR Response (Phone/Email):
I understand that seeing a spark can be alarming. All pop-up toasters contain a mechanical electrical switch which will emit a very brief spark when the toast control lever is released. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
If the consumer asks why they did not see a spark in a previous or different toaster:
All pop-up type toasters will emit a spark when the toast control lever is released. On some models this is less noticeable due to placement of internal components, venting, and size of the toast slots.
