Learning Objectives
After completing this training, you will be able to:
  • Understand toaster oven functions and features.
  • List and identify standard parts.
  • Give and understand troubleshooting.

Toaster Oven Basics

What is a Toaster Oven Used For
A toaster oven is like a smaller version of a conventional oven, but it uses less energy. A toaster oven can be used for:

  • Toasting
  • Baking
  • Broiling

Slice Capacity
There is not a standard bread size. We use a measurement from one of the world's largest baking companies (bread measuring approximately be 3 ½” by 4”).

Currently, we support 4, 6, 8, and 9 slice toaster ovens.

Toaster Oven Controls

The controls for a toaster oven can be digital or analog. The following illustration shows examples of the different types of toaster oven controls. Oven knob.jpg

Mechanical Toaster Oven Timers

Currently, all analog toaster ovens are equipped with mechanical timers. Mechanical timers are similar to kitchen timers and use a spring loaded mechanism to keep the time.

30 minute timer:

  • When making toast or using the TIMER function for baking, always turn the knob past 10 and then turn back or forward to the desired setting or time.
  • Make sure to account for preheating time if baking.
  • Alternatively, you can select STAY ON to bake longer than 30 minutes or to control the cooking time yourself.

60 minute timer:

  • When making toast or using the TIMER function for baking, always turn the knob past 20 and then turn back or forward to the desired setting or time.
  • Make sure to account for preheating time if baking.
  • Alternatively, you can select STAY ON to bake longer than 60 minutes or to control the cooking time yourself.

* Note: The timer will make a ticking noise even if the unit is not on.

Heating Features

Elements During Various Settings

  • When toasting, both heating elements will come on.
  • For broiling, only the top elements will come on.
  • When baking, both heating elements will cycle on and off to maintain the set temperature.

Optional Features

Exterior Surface to Hot

Toaster ovens, like many cooking appliances, get hot when in use.

  • Items should not be stored or placed on top of or near the sides of the toaster oven.
  • Oven mitts or potholders should be used when touching any outer or inner surface of the oven.
  • Depending on the length of time the unit is in use, the oven exterior could get as hot as the temperature inside the oven.

Toaster Oven Safeguards

Space around the Toaster Oven It is important that you keep a minimum distance of at least 4 inches of space on all sides of the toaster oven. This will allow for adequate air circulation and also help prevent any possible damage. A fire may occur if the toaster oven is covered or touching flammable material including drapes, curtains, walls, and other flammable materials when in operation or after, when still hot. While operating, the toaster oven should be on a stable and heat resistant surface – NOT a cloth-covered surface. Do not place any item on top of the appliance while in operation.

Bakeware When cooking in a toaster oven you can use: metal, ovenproof glass or ceramic bakeware without glass lids. Be sure food or container is at least 1 inch away from the top heating elements. Do not place flammable materials like cardboard, paper, plastic, etc. in the oven. If using ceramic or glass pans or dishes, make sure they are oven safe to avoid cracking.

Power Cord is too Short A short power cord (or detachable power cord) is provided to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord. An extension cord may be used, providing the marked electrical rating of the cord is at least as great as the electrical rating of the grill. We recommend “appliance” *type extension cords. Ensure the cord is arranged so that it cannot be pulled on by children or tripped over. Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces To protect against electrical shock do not immerse cord, plugs or appliance in water or other liquid. When the oven is not in use, it is recommended to unplug or disconnect it from the wall outlet.
